Coat by coat

Grooming schedules depend on the coat more than the breed. These are the typical intervals for each coat type. Your groomer may suggest a little more or less once they see your dog.

Full groom every 4 to 6 weeks

  • Nailsevery 4 weeks
  • Brushingdaily, or at least every other day
  • BreedsDoodles, Poodles, Bichons

Curly and wool coats, like Goldendoodles, Poodles and Bichons, keep growing and mat quickly. Most need a full groom every 4 to 6 weeks, with nails trimmed about every 4 weeks. Brush daily, or at least every other day, and check behind the ears, under the collar and in the armpits with a metal comb.

Full groom every 4 to 6 weeks

  • Nailsevery 4 weeks
  • Brushingdaily
  • BreedsShih Tzu, Yorkie, Maltese

Silky and long coats, like the Shih Tzu, Yorkie and Maltese, tangle easily, and tangles turn into mats fast. Plan on a full groom every 4 to 6 weeks and a daily brush. Brush before baths, never after, since water tightens tangles. A shorter pet trim stretches the time between grooms.

Full groom every 6 to 8 weeks

  • Nailsevery 6 weeks
  • Brushing2 times a week
  • BreedsSchnauzers, Westies, most terriers

Wire coats on Schnauzers, Westies and most terriers grow more slowly. A full groom every 6 to 8 weeks keeps them neat, with a brush twice a week at home. Groomers either hand-strip the coat or clip it. Clipping is fine for a pet, but it softens the coat over time.

De-shedding every 6 to 8 weeks

  • Nailsevery 6 weeks
  • Brushing2 to 3 times a week, daily in shedding season
  • BreedsGoldens, Huskies, Shepherds, Corgis

Double coats on Golden Retrievers, Huskies, German Shepherds and Corgis have a soft undercoat that sheds hard in spring and fall. A bath and brush or a de-shedding treatment every 6 to 8 weeks keeps shedding under control, with daily brushing in March and September. Never shave a double coat. The undercoat helps keep them cool in Orange County heat.

Bath and brush every 4 to 8 weeks

  • Nailsevery 6 weeks
  • Brushingonce a week with a rubber curry brush
  • BreedsLabs, Frenchies, Pugs, Pit Bulls

Short, smooth coats on Labs, French Bulldogs, Pugs and Pit Bulls are the easiest to keep up. A bath and brush every 4 to 8 weeks is plenty for most dogs, plus a weekly rub with a rubber curry brush. Nails and ears are the main reason to book, so keep nails on a 4 to 6 week cycle.

Why mobile helps

Why mobile grooming makes a schedule easier to keep

A schedule only works if you keep it. Mobile grooming removes most of the reasons owners fall behind, and many owners book the next groom before the van leaves.

  • No driveThe groomer parks outside your door.
  • No waiting roomNo drop-off, no pickup at closing time.
  • One dog at a timeCalm, one-on-one, in the van.
  • Same cadenceYour groomer can come back every 4 to 8 weeks.
