From the Dog Beach to your driveway
Huntington Dog Beach sits along Pacific Coast Highway north of the pier, and it is one of the few stretches of Orange County sand where dogs can run off leash. A morning there is great for your dog. It is less great for the coat.
Salt water dries out skin and leaves the coat stiff. Fine sand settles near the skin, where it rubs and itches. Rinse with fresh water after each trip, paying attention to the belly, armpits, and between the toes. If your dog goes often, book the van for the same afternoon. A bath and brush with a full blow dry gets out the sand a hose misses, and the sandy water stays in the van instead of your tub.
Double coats and the marine layer
Near the water, the marine layer keeps the air cool and damp for much of the year. A thick double coat, like a Golden Retriever's or a Husky's, can stay wet at the skin for hours after a swim. Trapped moisture under a dense undercoat can lead to hot spots and a musty smell.
The fix is getting the undercoat out and drying the dog all the way down. A de-shedding treatment removes loose undercoat so air can reach the skin. Done in the van, all that fur leaves with the groomer. Many owners near the beach book one each spring and fall, when shedding is heaviest.
